Planetside 2 PS4 Edition Coming, The PAX Prime reveal
It’s been confirmed at the recent PAX Prime event that SOE’s free-to-play MMOFPS Planetside 2 is coming to the PlayStation 4. Like its PC counterpart, the PS4 version will be free-to-play and feature micro-transactions, and will also contain the content from the latest update. Developers did not give any clear indication of when exactly the finished port would be released on Sony’s next-gen console, although based on their comments, it sounds as if it is nearing the final stages of production.
Lead designer Luke Sigmund told journalists, “It’s actually going to be exactly the same as the PC version, exact same setup.” He confirmed micro-transactions as well: “If you play you will earn Certification Points which is our earned currency, you spend that on weapons but you can also shortcut that with our paid currency. We’ll also have all the customizations, camos, all the decals and all that stuff.”
The PlayStation 4 version of PlanetSide 2 will also feature the latest massive Hossin update, which will no doubt please fans. The update will be massive, adding a whole new landmass to the game. “The biggest thing we have coming up is a brand new continent called Hossin,” Sigmund affirmed. “It’s going to be coming out pretty soon. It’ll definitely be there for the PS4 launch.”
The developers have stated that they will do their best to keep the PS4 port up-to-date with the PC version, although this may be difficult as updates will have to be approved and processed by Sony for release on the PlayStation Network. The two game versions will not play on the same servers, however, so cross-platform play is not a possibility.
Although developers have not yet given an official release date for the PlayStation 4 port of PlanetSide 2, they have stated that they are currently working on the new control scheme centered around the PlayStation gamepad as well as tweaking the UI for console play. A playable beta is slated for release later this year.
