New York’s Deadliest Terror Attack Since 9/11
A man drove a truck through a crowd of bicyclists and pedestrians a few blocks away from World Trade Center on Tuesday afternoon
All it took was nothing more than a driver and a truck to result in the deadliest attack since the 9/11 tragedy at World Trade Center. Six persons were killed in an instant, while two others died a few moments later. Moreover, eleven are still trying to recover as authorities are making efforts to find out what led to the attack.
“This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Authorities have identified the suspect: Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, Uzbekistan native who allegedly drove a rented pickup truck into an overcrowded bike path, crashed it into a school bus and then stepped outside brandishing imitation firearms.
He was then shot in the abdomen by a police officer; however, he survived and underwent surgery on Tuesday evening.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, said in an open letter that his country will do whatever it can to help the investigation. Moreover, Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted that five of the victims were Argentine citizens.
A note was found near the truck, claiming that the action was taken in the name of ISIS.
